Contract awarded to design Borough’s new care facilities

October 13, 2017

Wednesday 11 October 2017

Plans to build a new 60-bedroom care facility and day care centre on the site of the existing Priory care home and PLT Southend Academy (formerly Seabrook College) are moving forward with the appointment of Pellings as the design team and quantity surveyor for the project.

A planning application for the site, which will see the replacement of the smaller Priory and Delaware care homes and provide a new home for the Viking day care centre, will be submitted in early summer 2018. If approved, work could begin in late 2018 and completed by spring 2020, with the new care facility and day care centre opening in early summer 2020.

The new facilities will be operated by Southend Care Ltd under a lease agreement and will provide high quality services for people with high and complex needs, including dementia, and incorporating specialist services for people with disabilities. The new centre will be flexible, enabling people to remain as independent as possible, offering a wide range of activities to meet individual needs and interests as well as providing personal care, therapeutic and health interventions.

Cllr Lesley Salter, Executive Councillor for Health and Adult Social Care, says: “We have a real opportunity to become a leader in the way care is delivered through the development of new adult social care facilities for the Borough and I am very pleased that this important milestone has been reached.

“This is an exciting, innovative and ambitious project that will see new adult social care facilities created and will help ensure that we can continue to protect and safeguard our most vulnerable members of the community into the future.  Alongside this, it is also a practical project that help to ensure we can continue to provide the quality of adult social care that our residents deserve.”
Nicolas Maari, Head of Architecture at Pellings, says: “We have worked with the Council on various local schemes, including the conversion of the PROCAT Technical College into a new home for Southchurch High School and the first phase development of affordable housing in Shoeburyness, so we are delighted to continue to build our relationship as the design team and quantity surveyors for this new project.”
