Southend Carnival will travel along Southend seafront on Saturday 19 August, leaving Southchurch Park East at 6.45pm, and arriving at Shorefield Road around 8.30pm. This year will celebrate the 125 year history of Southend as a borough with 7 entries who with the support of StiltsPro are entering to tell that story.
This will include Razzamataz Theatre School, Southend RNLI Lifeboat Station (with a 1950s pier), SSAFFA (who will re-create a First World War military hospital that was housed in the Park Inn Palace Hotel, Rossi Ice Cream (celebrating their 85th birthday), Southend Gang Show, Southend Mencap and Music Man Project and Capataro Theatre (who are hoping to re-create the Kursaal Flyer). We are also looking forward to seeing Rampage the Luton based Caribbean carnival group join us.
Southend Carnival was awarded £9,300 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards its anniversary celebrations. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, a video will be made of the procession my local group MyTown Southend, which will be made available on a timeline of Carnival’s 111 year history in Southend at www.southendcarnivalevents.org.uk/about. Further work to archive other photos and carnival records will be carried out by volunteers with the support of Southend museums throughout the year, with the aim of creating a new exhibit on the carnival and developing seven procession entries, showcasing different periods of the borough’s history.
Robyn Llewelyn, Head of HLF East of England, said, “We’re delighted to support Southend Carnival to celebrate and share over 100 years of its history, especially in this anniversary year. Thanks to National Lottery players, the new film and archive will create a lasting record of the borough’s heritage for the future, and open up brilliant volunteering opportunities for the local community.”
This has been also supported by a grant from Southend Borough Council’s 125th Anniversary match funding support to such projects, and sponsorship from SummerCare, Rossi Ice Cream, Gleneagles Guesthouse, VIP Security, Greenlight Print Solutions and MWS Accountants.
Once again carnival’s travel partner is c2c; we strongly recommend using their stations, Southend East, Southend Central and Westcliff if you are coming to the procession, and Leigh or Chalkwell stations for the Beer Festival.
At the procession SummerCare are also again hosting an accessible viewing area in the raised space behind the police / first aid post next to the Sealife Centre car park opposite the Kursaal. To book a space for this area visit https://tinyurl.com/ydffx8ue
Southend Carnival along with its other events has been held every year in Southend since 1906, and last year raised £20k in funding for local charities; and enabled them the opportunity to take part in community events to raise their profile. Southend Carnival is completely volunteer run and led by a team who give over 10,000 hours of their time annually.
Other events in August 2017 include a Beer Festival (11-13 Aug @ Leigh Community Centre), Dog Show (13 August @ Priory Park) and Children’s Day (16 August @ Priory Park with 360 Play and Rossi Ice Cream).
